Josephus The History of the Jews Condensed in Simple English edition by Miriam Maranzenboim Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Very easy and enjoyable to read, hope the translation makes it as accurate as possible. Not sure.
The book is easy to read and gives you a broad understanding of the history of Jews. Understanding the 12 tribes was clearly explained.
So, any who was not so enthousiastic about history at school, I assume, that will read this book eagerly. Warmly recommend it to all who wants to bless Israel as antisemitism is increasing again.
My father law had other books about Josephus but their were written for other professors, they were hard to follow. But he told me Josephus The History of the Jews Condensed in Simple English was easy to follow along and better understand.
So we are both very happy with my purchase of this book. Thank you
Everyone should read this who is interested in Jewish writings including the Bible and the Apocrypha books. The original writings of Josephus are numerous, but this ebook has captured the essence.
Have just started reading and at the beginning Miriam compares what she has written to the original. I am able to read her version and it's very understandable. I have never read the original and from the one page of comparison, I would not have been able to get through more than two or three pages. Now I am able to read the whole book. It may take a while, but it's easy reading and I also find it interesting since, while the Bible has what we need to believe, there are some things not mentioned. Now it is clearer to me why Ham (Noah's son) was cursed and also approximately how many children our forefathers had.
This is definitely an important book and much is here that is not in other history books. Well recommended
My first encounter with Flavius Josephus—the man whom famed Church historian, Eusebius, called the most famous Jew of his time—and Josephus’s epic work, Antiquities of the Jews, was as an undergraduate student browsing my university library.
Twenty dusty (and, deservedly, lonely) leather-bound volumes on a top-shelf in a shadowy corner of the reference section, appearing to have never been touched.
I desperately wanted to read the prodigious work from cover to cover but I also hoped to finish school, find a job and someday start a family. Reading Josephus, back then, seemed incompatible with life.
Widely credited with providing posterity with details of ancient life not found in any other record, the Antiquities have now been made more accessible than ever by Miriam Maranzenboim, whose book, Josephus, the History of the Jews, is, as its cover claims, Condensed in Simple English.
The first update of the Antiquities in nearly 300 years, it’s easy to read and understand and can also serve as a reference.
The Antiquities were written in the 13th year of the reign of Roman emperor Flavius Domitian, around AD 93. The first ten volumes follow the historical books of the Hebrew Bible. The second ten continue the history beyond the biblical text, up to the Jewish War. In its preface, Josephus writes
"Now I have undertaken the present work, as thinking it will appear to all the Greeks worthy of their study; for it will contain all our antiquities, and the constitution of our government, as interpreted out of the Hebrew Scriptures."
Almost two millennia later, Maranzenboim’s condensation will certainly appear more than worthy of study to modern readers who lack the time to plow through 20 volumes.
Thanks, Miriam.
I have been working on reading this book. It is easy to read and Mariam Maranzenboim did a great job of putting it into a readable form. It is much like the Bible in that it is taking me awhile to read it and keep up with all the other things I have to do. I have always been interested in history and especially biblical history. This adds much to my knowledge of the fall of Jerusalem in 70 a.d and I started there. Now I have begun at the beginning. Hope to finish it this summer.
